Report: West Brom dealt blow in pursuit of striker who Jurgen Klopp says has ‘obvious skills’

Reported West Bromwich Albion target Christian Benteke is expected to stay at Crystal Palace this month despite interest from the Baggies, according to .

New West Brom boss Sam Allardyce is eager to sign a new striker in a bid to improve his side’s chances of surviving relegation from the Premier League.

Benteke has forced his way back into Roy Hodgson’s side this season but his future is in doubt following the arrival of Jean-Philippe Mateta on loan from Mainz.

The 30-year-old is into the final six months of his deal at Selhurst Park and will become a free agent in the summer.

However, according to , Benteke is said to be happy and settled at the London club, and is also unphased by Mateta’s arrival.

He would expect to have more options to consider if he were to become a free agent, and there are yet to be formal talks over a new deal, added the report.

TBR View:

Benteke may have endured a couple of difficult seasons but he’s still a good player who could offer a lot to the Baggies.

He is great in holding the ball up, winning aerial duels and dragging players away and freeing up space for teammates – not to mention he does have goals in him.

“I think everybody who thinks about writing Benteke off makes a big mistake, because his obvious skills are there,” Jurgen Klopp previously told the about his former player.

Sadly, it doesn’t look as though the move will take place, so the Baggies will have to look elsewhere.
