Report: West Brom aiming to announce their new manager by tomorrow

West Brom are reportedly closing in on David Wagner as their new manager, according to .

The outlet reported the news on Tuesday night and claimed the Baggies could confirm the appointment within 48 hours.

West Brom apparently had Chris Wilder at the top of their shortlist but the club’s owners decided not to pursue him.

As well as Wilder, the Baggies reportedly had Steve Cooper and Frank Lampard on their shortlist.

However, West Brom now look to have their man in Wagner.

Who is David Wagner?

Wagner, born in Frankfurt, spent his entire playing career in German football.

A striker in his playing days, he turned out for the likes of Eintracht Frankfurt, Mainz, Schalke, Gutersloh and Darmstadt.

Wagner also won eight caps for the United States.

He began his coaching career at Borussia Dortmund, managing their second team from 2011 to 2015.

Wagner, a former teammate and colleague of Jurgen Klopp, then joined Huddersfield in November 2015.

The 49-year-old steered the Terriers to an unlikely promotion to the Premier League via the playoffs in 2017.

He then kept the Yorkshire club in the top flight the following season.

However, Wagner parted ways with Huddersfield in January 2019 with the Terriers sat bottom of the Premier League.

He then took over at Schalke in May 2019 but parted company with the club in September 2020.

As a free agent, West Brom wouldn’t have to pay compensation for Wagner.

Wagner knows what it takes to get a club promoted from the arduous marathon that is the Championship.

He also knows what it takes to keep a club in the top flight, so hopefully he’ll succeed in his mission should he get the job.
