that Wayne Rooney’s Derby County are closing in on a loan deal to sign Rangers centre-back George Edmundson before Monday’s deadline – with the centre-back struggling for game time at Ibrox.
Edmundson, 23, has managed just one match for Rangers this season – falling down the pecking order under Steven Gerrard despite playing 15 times last season. Filip Helander, Connor Goldson and Leon Balogun are first choice.
He is one of a number of Rangers players that have been made available this month – with Jordan Jones leaving the club to join Sunderland until the summer. Now, £700k signing Edmundson could be about to join Rooney.
Gerrard’s former England teammate is set to sign Edmundson, with the player travelling to the Midlands and talks ongoing. It is believed Derby and Rooney have fended off competition, and a deal will go through this morning.

TBR’s view – Derby is a great move for Edmundson
The central defender has clearly lost his place in the Rangers side and his future at the Scottish club looks bleak. Jack Simpson has been signed from Bournemouth on a pre-contract, while Nikola Katic is to return from injury soon.
So, while Edmundson has left on loan, he could be leaving permanently in the summer. Showcasing his talent at a well-watched Championship side – due to Rooney – gives him the best exposure to interested parties. A good move.
