Report: Villa boss Steven Gerrard leading Celtic in race to sign Scottish star

Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is leading the race to sign Bologna defender Aaron Hickey, despite links to Celtic earlier this month. that Gerrard is intent on bringing him to the Premier League.

Hickey, 19, joined Bologna from Scottish Premiership side Hearts in the summer of 2020 – after clocking up 34 appearances at senior level for the Tynecastle club. He has since played 32 times for Bologna.

In his first season, Hickey only played 12 times but since then – he has become first choice. This season, he has featured in all 20 Serie A games for Bologna. Either at left-back or as a winger, Hickey has netted five goals.

That includes a beautiful effort with his right foot last time out, planting an effort into the top corner from the edge of the area. – – report that Villa and Gerrard are on pole to get Hickey.

It comes after a report from said that Celtic and Manchester City were also looking at Hickey. His value is on the rise, and quickly, with reporting that he is valued at £8million.

Gerrard eyes Hickey: Which is best – Villa, Celtic or Manchester City?

Aston Villa do need a left-back. While Matty Targett is first choice, he is the only option on the left side of the defence after Neil Taylor left. Targett has been good, but there is certainly the option to improve.

Hickey might be perfect. Given he is 19, he would be willing to provide cover for Targett and eventually overtake the ex-Southampton man. Celtic desperately need a left-back, with Greg Taylor hardly a long-term option.

Hickey would struggle for game time at Manchester City. So, either he joins Celtic and continues his brilliant development – or he takes the plunge now and joins Gerrard at Villa.
