Report: Victor Wanyama will only leave Tottenham on one condition, talks ongoing
that Victor Wanyama will only leave Tottenham Hotspur to join Club Brugge if the Belgian club qualify for the Champions League group stages next Wednesday.
Tottenham and Bruges are in talks to orchestrate a deal for the 28-year-old midfielder, who is in his fourth season at Tottenham after joining the club for £11.5million in the summer of 2016 from Southampton.
However, the signing of Tanguy Ndombele twinned with injuries towards the end of last season has seen Kenya captain Wanyama drop down the pecking order. Moussa Sissoko, Eric Dier and Harry Winks are also above in the rankings.
Spurs wanted as much as £17million for Wanyama, while Brugge were only willing to pay £8million. Talks are ongoing and both parties are deemed as confident in finding a compromise in order to orchestrate a deal.
But a move will not be completed if Brugge fail to reach the group stages of the Champions League. They are currently in the last round of qualifying and hold a slender 1-0 lead over Austrian side LASK – the second leg is next Wednesday.
TBR’s view – Wanyama has to leave, Champions League or not.
Unfortunately for Wanyama, he has no chance of breaking back into Mauricio Pochettino’s side. Now in the peak of his career, he needs to leave sooner rather than later and should have joined an English side while the window was still open.
The chance to play for a side in the Champions League is certainly attractive, but Wanyama should not base a move purely on Brugge’s progress into the competition. Indeed, he needs to leave no matter what the result for Brugge.
