Report: Two top-six PL sides could go after Liverpool’s Wjinaldum, player wants deal
in an exclusive that Gini Wijnaldum now wants to sign a new contract with Liverpool after entering the last six months of his current deal – but could face interest from Chelsea and Manchester City.
Previous reports have suggested that Wijnaldum, 30, was unsure on a new deal with Liverpool – but the latest claims are that he wants to put pen to paper. There is an offer on the table from the Reds, but Wijnaldum wants more.
The Dutch midfielder feels as though he deserves a long-term contract despite his age, having proved his importance to the Reds over the past few seasons. But the Liverpool board are unsure on offering a 30-year-old a long-term deal.
Whether the two parties come to a compromise remains to be seen. Now we have hit 2021, non-English sides can sign him on a pre-contract agreement under the Bosman rule – which would see him join on a free in the summer.
The report claims interest in Wijnaldum is hotting up. Inter, PSG and Wolves have been linked, but the report claims that Chelsea and Manchester City could also become interested in Wijnaldum in January – or next summer.

TBR’s view – Wijnaldum must not join another English side
His legacy at Liverpool – a side where he has surpassed 200 appearances in all competitions and won both the Premier League and Champions League – is so good that if he joins another English club, he will be vilified.
A move to Chelsea and even worse, title rivals Manchester City, would see Wijnaldum go from hero to zero among Liverpool supporters. A move abroad, if he is to leave, is the only consideration that comes into his thinking.
