Report: Two fresh new names labelled as ‘contenders’ to replace Steven Gerrard at Rangers

Rangers are stepping up their search for Steven Gerrard’s replacement, and say Sean Dyche and Alex Neil are ‘contenders’ to take over.

Gerrard, 41, left Rangers on Thursday after penning a contract at Aston Villa until the summer of 2025. The timing has surprised many.

Sitting first in the Scottish Premiership table, Rangers were on their way to a second successive title. They could still be in Europe after Christmas.

The early favourites to take over from Gerrard include Gio van Bronckhorst and Gennaro Gattuso – who could return to Ibrox after 20 years.

But it appears they are not the only options for Rangers and Ross Wilson. The Times say two new names have emerged as contenders.

Dyche and Neil: Could duo really be considered by Rangers board?

Dyche seems incredibly unlikely. The Burnley manager has been in the dugout for nine years at Turf Moor – clocking up 405 games as gaffer.

He has been linked with numerous jobs at times, Everton being one. But he has stayed put at Burnley – and Rangers are unlikely to change that.

Scottish boss Neil, meanwhile, has been out of work since March – having left Preston. He is also incredibly experienced, with Scottish experience.

He clocked up 77 appearances for Hamilton, as well as 45 wins in 108 games as Norwich manager. Neil would be attainable, but Rangers can do better.
