Report: Tottenham working hardest to try and sign ‘world-class’ Barcelona player

Tottenham Hotspur are currently the club working hardest to try and sign Memphis Depay, according to .

Spurs have done superbly in the summer transfer window, bringing in five players and closing in on a sixth.

England Under-21 full-back Djed Spence is reportedly set to join Tottenham from Middlesbrough.

He’d follow Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison and Clement Lenglet in joining Spurs.

And Pete O’Rourke believes Antonio Conte and the Tottenham hierarchy may yet have more transfers in mind.

“I think they are looking at another attacker and possibly a centre-back if players do leave,” he wrote on GiveMeSport.

In terms of attackers, Barcelona and Netherlands ace Depay is reportedly available now.

The Blaugrana are reportedly about to sign Robert Lewandowski from Bayern Munich.

In addition, they have recently landed Raphinha from Leeds United, while Ousmane Dembele has penned fresh terms.

Sport describes this as the ‘worst-case scenario’ coming true for Depay.

‘Xavi already has his six top attackers for the team and Depay is not one of them’, they wrote.

But while Tottenham are pushing the hardest to sign the 28-year-old, the report suggests he may not be overly keen on Spurs.

‘Until now, Tottenham was the club that has put the most effort into signing Memphis,’ continued .

‘Although the player is not much for their work.

‘Juventus and Roma have also asked, as have Ajax.’

Sport adds that Barca want 20m euros (£17m) for Depay.

Tottenham have already landed one player from Barcelona this summer, signing Lenglet on loan.

World-class bargain potentially up for grabs

Depay to Spurs wouldn’t be a bad shout at all.

He has rebuilt his career since leaving the Premier League. And he may return feeling that he has a big point to prove.

With Spurs now in the Champions League, Conte will no doubt want even more strength in depth up front.

And Depay is a ‘‘ forward who looks to be available for a cut-price fee.

He’ll no doubt get many offers this summer.

But playing under Conte at a Champions League club would surely be appealing.
