Report: Tottenham will pursue £20m star in January, or two freebies in the summer

Tottenham Hotspur will pursue Juventus star Weston McKennie in January. However, he looks likely to remain at Juventus, and that might see Fabio Paratici go after Marcelo Brozovic or Franck Kessie in the summer.

McKennie, 23, has been excellent for Juventus since joining the Old Lady in 2020 from Schalke. Since then, he has clocked up 65 appearances for Juve. But there are some slight concerns regarding attitude.

Whether that is failing to stick to a diet, not adhering to tactics or breaking lockdown rules – the USA ace has come under the microscope. But he works harder than most, and chips in with the odd goal, eight in 65 for Juve.

That is double Harry Winks’ amount of goals, and Winks has played 183 times. that Leeds are also in the mix for McKennie, and is rated at £20million. But Juve are unlikely to sell in January.

Athletic journalist Charlie Eccleshare says Tottenham will monitor McKennie’s availability in January – but that they may decide to go for a free agent in the summer, namely Inter’s Brozovic or Milan star Kessie.

“McKennie was on Paratici’s radar in the summer, and he will be across his potential availability in January,” Eccleshare told “Spurs may decide, though, to wait until the summer.

“And then try to bring in either Franck Kessie from AC Milan or Marcelo Brozovic from Inter, both of whom would be available on a Bosman free transfer,” Eccleshare continued in his assessment of Tottenham’s January window.

McKennie, Brozovic or Kessie: Which is Tottenham’s best option?

Firstly, Brozovic is a good player. On a free, he is a good signing. But his slow-tempo style is best-suited to Serie A football. Yes, he would form a reunion with Antonio Conte, but Conte needs energy in midfield. Brozovic is not that.

Kessie would be a superb signing. Again, available for nothing, the Ivory Coast ace has speed, energy, goals – a bit of everything. Last season he scored 14 times. But his wages will be massive, given he is going on a Bosman.

The best option, and the best of the three suited to Spurs is McKennie. Those attitude issues would be swept aside by a manager such as Conte. Even if they have to wait until next summer, McKennie is Tottenham’s best option.
