Report: Tottenham to re-enter January window to sign left-footed Barcelona ace

S Tottenham have re-entered the market to sign Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet. It is believed that Spurs tried to sign the Frenchman in the January transfer window.

Lenglet, 26, has been in and out of Barcelona’s side this season. Coming into the season, France international Lenglet had clocked up 133 appearances in three seasons with the Nou Camp outfit.

But this time around, he has dropped down the pecking order – only managing 12 appearances in all competitions. Of those 12, he has only started nine – remaining an unused substitute on 11 other occasions.

Signed from Sevilla for £32million (), Lenglet could now leave in January despite having a contract until 2026. Romero reports that Tottenham tried to sign the left-footed defender back in the summer.

Lenglet rejected a move to Tottenham, but that was under Nuno Espirito Santo and with little hope of finish in the top four. Now, under Antonio Conte, there is hope. Romero says Tottenham want Lenglet, again.

His Tweet is translated as: “Tottenham back to the charge for Lenglet in the winter market. The player did not want to go to England in the summer and rejected the Spurs offer.”

Tottenham eye Lenglet: Perfect signing, but can Conte tempt him?

Conte’s defensive options are strong. Eric Dier is the first-choice option in the heart of the back three, with Joe Rodon his direct replacement. Davinson Sanchez, Japhet Tanganga and Cristian Romero are fighting to play on the right.

On the left, though, there is only Ben Davies as an option. He has been excellent for Spurs this season but naturally, he is a left-back. Lenglet would be the ideal competition for Davies, and ultimately, replace the Welshman easily.

Lenglet, on his day, is one of the best central defenders in European football – but he needs game time. On the left of Tottenham’s back three, he could be just what they need to return to the Champions League.
