Chelsea also want the ‘‘ 25-year-old, who has his sights set on joining Barcelona.

Tottenham to make first Raphinha bid

Tottenham making a first bid for Raphinha is probably very bad news for Arsenal – depending on what sort of fee the North London rivals are prepared to pay.

Leeds look ready to dig their heels in and make sure that they receive a top fee for the winger. Obviously, his value could increase further should he stay at Elland Road and have an amazing World Cup.

But clearly, he wants to play in the Champions League should he leave Leeds. And Tottenham can offer that.

Spurs also appear to be moving in the right direction at a rapid rate.

Arsenal are also taking steps forward. However, they did not manage to hold onto a top-four spot last season. So that makes their task much trickier.

It seemed a risk for Arsenal to make an opening bid which fell well short of Leeds’ asking price. And the early signs suggest that it may have indeed backfired.

They appear to have encouraged others to bid. And obviously, his other admirers may be able to offer Raphinha the chance to play at Europe’s top table immediately.
