He was one of West Brom’s shining lights during their most recent stay in the Premier League. And his form earned the goalkeeper a spot in the England fold.

West Brom are not returning to the top-flight next season. But Johnstone may well be.

Reports claimed that Spurs are growing increasingly confident of signing the 29-year-old. Antonio Conte apparently intends to initially use him as a backup for Hugo Lloris, before he potentially takes the captain’s number one position further down the line.

Interestingly, it would appear that Tottenham will not get another chance to look at Johnstone this season. , Steve Bruce is not planning to use him again. Instead, David Button will play.

Tottenham signing Sam Johnstone would be a smart piece of business

Tottenham have had some superb backup goalkeepers in recent years. And Johnstone would be another if he makes the move in the coming weeks. He has been described as ‘‘ previously.

He has been linked with other clubs with his future seemingly lying elsewhere. Rangers apparently want the former Manchester United man. And Spurs will be wary of losing out considering that they are not planning to offer first-team football immediately.

It would be a very smart piece of business if a deal gets done.

He is certainly now going to have time to consider his options in the weeks ahead.
