The 29-year-old has started just 10 Premier League games this season but the majority of those came under Mauricio Pochettino.

Current manager Jose Mourinho admitted after Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Southampton that Rose was indeed down the pecking order.

The man with 29 England caps wasn’t even in the squad for Saturday’s game and his days are now numbered at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Rose had previously stated an intention to stay . His contract is due to expire in 2021 and was willing to run down the end of that.

His stance now looks like changing with first-team football seemingly miles away.

Rose is paid £60,000-a-week at Tottenham and it will be interesting to see if he can secure a move before the transfer deadline.

TBR View – Rose is making the right decision for his career

At 29, Rose simply needs to play regular football. Competition for his England place is fierce and Gareth Southgate needs him to be playing games.

Whether it be Newcastle or another Premier League club, Rose is right to seek a move.

Mourinho has proved stubborn with certain players at his previous clubs and once his mind is made there isn’t a great deal of negotiating.

Rose is making a choice based on his career and he will surely benefit from a Tottenham departure.
