According to , Tottenham believe Steven Bergwijn has a big future in football, but they’re still prepared to sell him this summer.

The now-24-year-old has been at Spurs for two-and-a-half years. After his blistering debut against Manchester City, Tottenham fans were convinced he was the real deal.

However, after 83 appearances and just eight goals scored, it’s clear that the Dutch international has no future at the club under Antonio Conte.

That’s the reason why he’s so desperate to leave Spurs, and the report claims Ajax are keen to sign him.

Ajax were very close to signing Bergwijn in the January transfer window, but that deal failed to materialise.

The Dutch champions are still keen to bring him in, and journalist Mike Verweij claimed this week that they’re even willing to break their transfer record to get the deal over the line. He even claimed that he’s ‘almost certain‘ that Bergwijn will move to Amsterdam at the start of next month.

Ajax are set to step up their interest in Bergwijn soon, and all signs point toward a transfer in the very near future.

However, the report claims that Tottenham staff actually believe Bergwijn has a big future in the game – even though he doesn’t quite have a place at the club anymore.

TBR View:

Bergwijn is a hugely talented player, there’s no debate on that front.

The Dutchman, despite only being 24, has played over 250 senior games for club and country over the years, and he’s hugely versatile as well. He can play anywhere across the front three, which makes him a great option for most managers to have in the squad.

Things just haven’t worked out for Bergwijn at Tottenham, and although an argument can be made that he didn’t take his chances, it has to be said that he wasn’t handed enough game time – especially last season where he played just 875 minutes of football in all competitions.

Bergwijn is very likely to leave Tottenham this summer, and Spurs staff are right, there is a very good chance that he’ll go on to become a fine player elsewhere in the coming years.
