Report: Tottenham see Alessandro Bastoni as potential heir to Vertonghen

Some at Tottenham Hotspur see Alessandro Bastoni as an heir to Jan Vertonghen, that the transfer target is seen as having a similar style to the Belgian.

Bastoni looks to be a top target for Tottenham this summer. Antonio Conte is looking to strengthen on the left of the back three. And the Inter Milan star is on his radar.

Reports previously claimed that Conte believes that Bastoni can become one of the world’s best in his role. Inter meanwhile, value the 23-year-old at around £51 million.

Obviously, that would be a huge outlay for Spurs. He would be one of their most expensive signings ever. But Tottenham clearly believe that he could be more than worth the money.

In fact, that some at Spurs see Bastoni as something of a successor to Vertonghen. The centre-back was an amazing servant for the club, making well over 300 appearances in all competitions.

Football London reports that they believe that the two players have a similar style. And it is suggested that he would complement Cristian Romero’s aggression on the other side of the back three.

Bastoni an heir to Vertonghen

It has taken Tottenham some time. But they are forming a backline capable of rivalling the defence that enjoyed so much success under Mauricio Pochettino.

They had two amazing full-backs in Kyle Walker and Danny Rose. And the partnership between Vertonghen and Toby Alderweireld seemed to be one of the best in the world for some time.

The current Tottenham side need to improve out wide. But the likes of Romero and Eric Dier have been exceptional under Conte.

Bastoni has proven himself under Conte at San Siro. So adding him to the mix would be a huge statement ahead of next season.
