Report: Tottenham ready to bid for 28-year-old Englishman

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make a bid for Sam Johnstone, that they have scouted all of his performances so far this season.

What’s the story?

Spurs could be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper next summer. As noted by the Sunday Mirror, Hugo Lloris is out of contract at the end of the campaign.

Pierluigi Gollini meanwhile, is only on loan for the time-being.

And it appears that Johnstone is a player that they are monitoring very closely.

Interestingly, it is being reported that the Baggies want more than £20 million for Johnstone.

As things stand however, it is going to be incredibly difficult for Valerien Ismael’s men to demand that sort of fee.

Like Lloris, Johnstone is currently set to be out of contract in the summer ().

Tottenham have no reason to offer anything like £20 million for Johnstone in January

It is hard to see Spurs making any sort of bid for Johnstone in January. They are well-stocked between the sticks for this season.

And Johnstone will be available on a free in the summer if he does not sign a new deal at the Hawthorns.

For that reason, there is surely no way that Tottenham would even be tempted to go near offering £20 million for the England international.

Johnstone is a very good goalkeeper. But he has arguably not yet proven that he is enough of an upgrade on what Spurs already have to make them think that paying an eight-figure sum in January is a good idea.

Instead, a summer move – perhaps after helping the Baggies to promotion – is much more likely.
