Report: Tottenham player set to sign for new club today

that Toby Alderweireld is set to sign a three-year contract with Qatari side Al-Duhail on Sunday. A picture has emerged on social media of the Tottenham defender in an Al-Duhail scarf having touched down in the middle east. Now, he will sign with the QSL side.

Alderweireld, 32, has struggled over the past 12 months at Tottenham – failing to replicate his best form. Under Jose Mourinho, Spurs struggled at centre-back. Alderweireld was a reason for that – along with Eric Dier and Davinson Sanchez. Now, Spurs have decided to cash in on the Belgian.

HLN report that Alderweireld is about to sign a three-year deal with the Qatari Stars League side. Ex-Nottingham Forest gaffer Sabri Lamouchi is currently in charge. A fee of £11million will see Alderweireld end a six-year stint at Tottenham and join Al-Duhail – his replacement could be Cristian Romero.

Romero in, Alderweireld to Al-Duhail, is brilliant Tottenham business

Alderweireld has been a brilliant servant to Tottenham. Clocking up 236 appearances in those six years at Spurs, averaging little under 40 games a season, Alderweireld has been excellent. But he has surpassed his best form and a move was the right decision this summer. Even last summer, perhaps.

Bringing in Romero as his replacement gives Tottenham a player currently in the form of his life. He is only getting better. With Romero expected to cost the best part of £40million, getting £11million in for Alderweireld – and his wages off the list – makes the signing of Romero much easier.
