According to German outlet , Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United are both interested in signing Borussia Dortmund midfielder Axel Witsel on a free transfer this summer.

The now-33-year-old Belgian midfielder joined Dortmund all the way back in 2018 and has been a fantastic player for them, featuring in 145 games in all competitions. However, he has refused to sign a new contract at the Westfalenstadion now.

Witsel, previously been labelled as ‘world class’ by Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc (), will be a free agent in July, and even though he’s 33, he will not be short of offers across Europe.

Two clubs who are said to be keen are Tottenham and Manchester United, who both need strengthening in the middle of the park.

Tottenham want to sign Axel Witsel

Tottenham allowed Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele to leave the club on loan in January, while Dele Alli joined Everton on a permanent deal. It’s unlikely that Lo Celso or Ndombele will play again for Tottenham, and Harry Winks might also be shown the door soon.

To add to that, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has played a staggering 100 games for Spurs since he joined them last season, has been linked with a reunion with Jose Mourinho at AS Roma.

If all of those moves transpire as expected, Tottenham will need to bring in at least one new midfielder, and someone as experienced as Witsel would be a phenomenal addition.

The Belgian has played at the top level for club and country, is good on the ball, positionally disciplined and fits Conte’s system perfectly. He would be a fine signing, and the fact that he’d be available on a free transfer makes him all the more attractive for Daniel Levy.

Vertonghen was once amazed by Witsel

It has been close to two years since Jan Vertonghen left Tottenham, but the Belgian is still adored by Spurs supporters across the globe.

The 35-year-old defender, who’s now in Portugal with Benfica, knows Witsel very well thanks to their time together in the national team, and he has already given his seal of approval for Tottenham to sign him.

In an before the Euros last year, Vertonghen said about Witsel: “At first I didn’t know where Axel would be when he got here. But he amazed me with his physical readiness. It’s unbelievable how he did it.

“I never expected him to join this form. He trains hard and you can see that he is also very advanced physically. I think he will play an important role for us.”
