Report: Tottenham looking at signing giant 6ft 6inch centre-back, he became a national hero at the World Cup

Tottenham are on alert over the potential signing of Harry Souttar after his performances for Australia at the World Cup.

That is according to the who say the 6ft 6in central defender became a national hero for his displays on route to the round of 16.

They claim that Spurs were previously interested in the Stoke defender and they and Everton have been alerted by his work on the world stage.

Australia stunned Tunisia and Denmark to qualify from their group before succumbing to eventual winners Argentina in the first knockout round.

Tottenham on alert over Souttar

According to a report from the  last October, Tottenham were among the teams looking to sign Souttar and had been watching him for months.

That was just weeks before Antonio Conte was appointed Spurs boss and the club have still not properly sorted out the centre of their defence.

Conte wants assurances he will be backed in the transfer market before he commits his future to Tottenham as he looks to end their wait for a trophy dating back to 2008.

Souttar had a great World Cup but if he is the man signed to bolster Spurs’ defence, Daniel Levy will face accusations of doing things on the cheap again.

Levy signed Joe Rodon from Swansea in the Championship for Jose Mourinho but Conte has sent him out on loan to Rennes because he is not at the level to get regular games for Spurs.

Djed Spence also came from the second tier in the summer, and was clearly a club signing, and Spurs need more than Souttar to really root out their defensive issues.
