Report: Tottenham have been in talks for weeks to sign ‘world-class’ player with £265m release clause on loan
Tottenham Hotspur are in extensive talks to sign central defender Clement Lenglet on loan from Barcelona this summer.
report that Spurs have been in discussions for weeks now over the prospect of getting the Frenchman on a temporary basis.
Barca’s financial troubles are well known and they would prefer a permanent exit for Lenglet.
But they understand the reality of the situation and are willing to accept a loan deal in order to get him off the wage bill and balance the books.
Tottenham in talks with Lenglet
Lenglet is apparently open to leaving the Nou Camp, despite having chosen to stick around in previous windows during their financial plight.
It remains to be seen if the Premier League appeals to him, but Barca are hoping that it does as they look to reshape their squad.
Xavi has already told Lenglet he is not part of his plans and encouraged him to leave the club before the window closes.
And Tottenham are looking for a new central defender to bolster their back three, with their search spanning far and wide.
Lenglet has been described as ‘world class’ at times but his career has lost its way at Barca, where he has slipped down the pecking order.
Xavi wants new defenders and that could open up an opportunity for Spurs, although they signed a Barca defender last summer in the shape of Emerson Royal and that has not gone to plan.
Lenglet has a £265 million release clause, as per the BBC, and it is not often a player with that in his contract can leave on loan.
But that is the situation at Barca right now, with the Neymar transfer spooking them into inserting huge clauses into their players’ deals, but their finances still needing some serious balancing.
