reveal today that Tottenham Hotspur considered a late move to sign Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha on transfer deadline day.

Spurs were surprisingly inactive yesterday. Many fans expected them to make at least one new signing, but they decided against it in the end. However, they did consider a surprise move for Zaha, claims that report.

Spurs signed seven new players this summer. Deals for Fraser Forster, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet, Djed Spence and Destiny Udogie were all completed, and the North Londoners deserve a lot of credit for that.

However, it looks like Conte wanted more, and the player he looked at very late in the window yesterday was Zaha, who has just not been able to get that big move away from Crystal Palace.

The Ivorian is one of the most dangerous players in the Premier League. He was absolutely incredible for Palace last season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions, including one against Tottenham at Selhurst Park.

Zaha, branded as a ‘phenomenal’ player, has started this season brilliantly as well. The 29-year-old has scored four times already – the same as Harry Kane, despite playing a game fewer than the Tottenham man.

It’s no shock at all that there was late interest in Zaha, but luring him away from Palace on deadline day would’ve surely been expensive.

TBR View:

Tottenham were linked with the likes of Adama Traore and Dan James yesterday, and moves for both those players made sense as they could’ve played as wing-backs if necessary.

Zaha can play there too, but it makes absolutely no sense to use him in that position when he has been so dangerous further up the pitch.

If Tottenham had signed Zaha, there’s no way he would’ve displaced either Son Heung-min or Dejan Kulusevski. There’s an argument to be made that he would even have been behind Richarlison in Antonio Conte’s pecking order.

A move to Spurs just didn’t make sense for Zaha, but it will be interesting to see if Tottenham will go back in for him next summer, when the Ivorian will be available for free.
