It is perhaps a surprise that his admirers are not willing to pay £14 million.

Reports this week claimed that Fabio Paratici had been impressed every time he had watched Garner last season. The Tottenham chief often watched Nottingham Forest to keep an eye on the progress of Djed Spence.

Meanwhile, Leeds made contact over a potential move back in May.

In fairness, neither club lacks options in the middle of the park. Spurs are yet to fully unleash new signing Yves Bissouma. And Leeds appear to have put together an impressive pairing in Tyler Adams and Marc Roca.

But Garner is a ‘‘ talent. And he will not cost a huge amount.

With so many admirers, it is hard to imagine that one team will not come forward with the amount Manchester United are looking for.
