Report: Toby Alderweireld prepared to leave Tottenham on a free transfer in summer 2020
Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld will reportedly let his contract run down in North London. , Alderweireld is ready to leave Spurs next summer when his contract expires.
Alderweireld is entering the final year of his contract and has been the subject of much speculation this summer. The Belgium international has a £25m release clause, which is considered a snip for a player of his quality.
However, despite interest from other clubs, there were no concrete offers for Alderweireld and his release clause was not met. He is still at Tottenham and he played the opening game of the season against Aston Villa. But he is thinking ahead to next summer.

From January, the 30-year-old is able to open talks with clubs in Europe. With his contract entering the final few months, Alderweireld can sign a pre-contract agreement with clubs abroad.
This is Alderweireld’s plan, according to this report. The central defender, who has played 160 times for Spurs, is ready for a new challenge and he is willing to leave on a free transfer.
TBR’s view
This is a blow for Tottenham. They would have been hoping to tie Alderweireld down to a new and improved contract. But he feels like now is the time to move and try a new challenge.
Spurs will miss his presence at the back but there are other options there for Mauricio Pochettino. With Alderweireld leaving, this propels Davinson Sanchez into a more senior role. And it could present some opportunities for Juan Foyth and Japhet Tanganga.
