three out-of-work managers have applied for the Sunderland post, while The Black Cats are interested in two managers currently in work – and contact has been made with Barnsley boss Daniel Stendel.
Jack Ross was sacked by Sunderland on Tuesday, and talks instantly began on his successor. The latest reports claims Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips, ex-Middlesbrough player Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink and Gary Rowett have applied.
Meanwhile, Sunderland are said to be interested in Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook and Coventry City’s Mark Robins is also a contender. The report also claims Sunderland have made contact with Daniel Stendel, who was sacked by Barnsley.
The German boss gained promotion with Barnsley last season but was sacked earlier this month, with many of the belief his axe was harsh. It remains to be seen what direction Sunderland owner Stewart Donald will go in.

Phillips is a Sunderland legend and the likes of Frank Lampard have proven that young managers can make the grade, even at their former clubs. But Sunderland is a risky club to manage first off and Sunderland may want someone more proven.
Hasselbaink has played for Middlesbrough, and that may make his appointment criticised by Sunderland fans. Rowett, Cook and Robins all have experience of League One – but the best appointment on paper is Stendel.
He guided Barnsley to promotion just a few months ago, by playing some excellent football. The 45-year-old is ideal.
