Sunderland favourite Kevin Phillips has put his hat in the ring to replace Jack Ross, .
Ross was sacked by Sunderland recently and the club begins its search for a new manager. Phillips has put his name forward for the role and he wants to take his former club back to the Championship.
Phillips has legend status at Sunderland. In a six-season spell on Wearside, he netted 130 goals in 235 appearances. This included the rare feat of 30 goals in one Premier League season in 1999/2000.

The 8-cap ex-England striker retired in 2014 and has been coaching ever since. Phillips has spent time with Leicester City, Derby County and Stoke City in various coaching roles. However, he has never been given a chance to take a full-time managerial role.
Phillips has put himself forward for the Sunderland job. He is desperate to get into management and he believes he is the right man to take the Black Cats back to the second tier.
TBR’s view
Phillips would be a sentimental appointment but his lack of experience would be a major concern. Sunderland need a manager who can get them back up to the Championship and it is not time to take risks.
Perhaps bringing Phillips back onto the coaching staff could be a mutually beneficial arrangement. But there are more experienced options out there for Sunderland to consider.
