Report: Sunderland battle to keep Aiden McGeady amid MLS interest

According to the print edition of The Sun on Sunday (7th July, page 61), Sunderland midfielder Aiden McGeady is attracting attention from the United States.

A host of Major League Soccer clubs are reportedly weighing up swoops for McGeady. And the winger is said to be interested by the prospect of moving to America.

McGeady has stuck by Sunderland despite their double drop from the Premier League to League One. Last season, he scored 14 and assisted six but could not guide Sunderland to promotion.

The Black Cats fell short in the play-off final against Charlton Athletic. And now, with another League One campaign to prepare for, they might lose McGeady.

After two years and 21 goals for Sunderland, the 33-year-old is considering an end-of-career trip to the MLS. This would be a major blow for Jack Ross, who was hoping to build a promotion-winning side around McGeady.

TBR’s view

Sunderland could not begrudge McGeady a move at this stage of his career. He only has a few years left and clearly wants to try a new challenge.

But losing the Republic of Ireland international will be a big blow for Ross. Using any funds generated from his sale, Sunderland need to bring in a proven quality replacement, like Marcus Maddison of Peterborough United.
