Report suggests why Jose Mourinho left Carlos Vinicius out of Spurs squad on Sunday
Tottenham Hotspur manager Jose Mourinho rang the changes on Sunday, not only in terms of his starting XI but also the Spurs bench.
Five players who started in Tottenham’s shock Europa League loss to Antwerp – Carlos Vinicius, Serge Aurier, Davinson Sanchez, Dele Alli and Steven Bergwijn – didn’t make the Spurs squad for the Premier League meeting with Brighton.

Vinicius’ absence from the squad appeared harsh, given he was one of Tottenham’s better players in the opening 45 minutes, providing a focal point for their attack and showing good hold-up play, with the players around him more of an issue than his own display.
According to , Vinicius did not have an injury and it was simply a decision made by Mourinho for the game along with the other players left out, the Portuguese seeking to send a message that nobody’s place in a matchday squad is safe.
TBR View:
While Vinicius certainly didn’t deserve to be omitted from the squad entirely, Mourinho has never shied away from bold – sometimes even controversial – decisions, and given how Spurs ran out 2-1 winners over Brighton, his selection wasn’t proven wrong.
Mourinho’s decision made clear that he doesn’t want standards to drop in training or in matches, so now the onus is on the players to prove why they’re worthy of a spot in the XI and indeed the squad.
