Report suggests Shkodran Mustafi has not been ruled out as Liverpool transfer option

It appears that Arsenal’s misfit defender Shkodran Mustafi might not be as left-field a transfer option for Liverpool this month as many previously opined.

Liverpool are in need of a new central defender with Joel Matip joining Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez on the treatment table recently.

Reds boss Jurgen Klopp has now admitted the club are looking to bring in a new defender before February 1st. However, a torrent of names that were subsequently linked with Anfield in the aftermath of Klopp’s admission were swiftly denied by the club.

Mustafi, however, was not. It is hardly a strong claim, but the report suggests that Mustafi’s name has not been crossed off any sort of shortlist.

He is a German countryman of Klopp’s and is said to be in the process of negotiating a settlement to leave Arsenal on a free transfer this month. His current deal expires in the summer.

Of course, Mustafi’s form has recently left plenty to be admired but the former Everton youngster is a World Cup winner who once cost Arsenal a cool £35 million

Jurgen Klopp has seemingly been a fan of Mustafi in the past. in 2015 that Liverpool wanted to bring Mustafi from Valencia to Borussia Dortmund.

Mustafi would be considered a short-term fix for Liverpool which whilst not Klopp’s preference he also did not rule out, referencing a previous deal for Steven Caulker at Anfield.

So whilst Mustafi might not be a popular option there are few other centre-backs out there that fit the bill for what Liverpool are after.

Mustafi might just be the one.
