Report suggested Leeds United interest in Ugurcan Cakir, Sheffield United still more likely
Leeds United are reportedly in the race for Turkish goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir, according to reports this week.
The talented goalkeeper has long been linked with several moves to English football. One of the teams seemingly keen is Sheffield United, who are looking for a replacement for former loanee Dean Henderson.
that the Blades had an initial €15 million (£13.5m) offer for the 24-year-old rejected. After that bid came in, Leeds reportedly made their interest known for the player. Brighton also made contact.
The report claims this saw Sheffield United make a €20 million (£18m) offer, which was rejected, with Cakir’s club Trabzonspor ready to accept a €22 million (£20m) offer.
Leeds United’s interest in Cakir would appear odd considering their current goalkeeping options. The Whites have Illan Meslier and Kiko Casilla on the books and the arrival of Cakir would likely see one of the current goalkeeper crop depart. There have been rumours regarding Casilla’s future at the club but Leeds will be working to a strict budget this summer and spending a large portion of that on a goalkeeper they do not need would seem an odd decision.
This seems like a rumour for Leeds United fans to track, but it is more likely any lingering interest in the Turkish talent is being used to drive up the price of negotiations with their Yorkshire rivals.
