Report: Tottenham up against Manchester United for ‘unbelievably good’ World Cup centre-back
With the Premier League season grinding to a halt due to the World Cup, Tottenham Hotspur can now take stock of their season so far.
On the surface, Spurs have done well enough, sitting in the Premier League top four and reaching the Champions League knockouts.
However, Tottenham could’ve done a lot better, with inconsistency and injuries letting them down on a fair few occasions.
The defence still looks shaky and, according to reports, Antonio Conte and Fabio Paratici are looking for reinforcements.
According to , Spurs are in the race for Napoli and South Korea centre-back Kim Min-jae.
Tottenham are far from the only club apparently in pursuit of the 26-year-old, however.
As well as Spurs, the likes of Manchester United, Juventus, Brighton & Hove Albion and Fulham are reportedly eyeing Kim.
The World Cup– defender has been a revelation for Napoli this season after joining as a replacement for Kalidou Koulibaly.
Kim was named Serie A’s Player of the Month in September, just his second month in the Italian top flight.
His efforts have helped Napoli establish an eight-point lead at the top of Serie A and top their Champions League group.
The Partenopei reportedly value Kim at €45-50m (around £43.5m), having paid just £16million for his services.
‘The most impressive defender in the league’
Journalist Matteo Bonetti waxed lyrical about Kim on earlier this season.
‘Kim Min-Jae has been unbelievably good, to the point where you wonder how Napoli could’ve possibly acquired him for so little,’ he wrote.
‘What’s more impressive is how Kim has matched the best version of Kalidou Koulibaly so quickly.
‘At 6’3, the Korean international is deceptively quick. So you can play a high line without worrying too much about a striker beating him in behind.
‘He’s also very aggressive, reads the game exceptionally well for a player without much experience in the top European leagues, and has looked dominant in the air.
‘While two months is a small sample size to make sweeping statements about a player, so far he’s been the most impressive defender in the league.’
Unrealistic in January – TBR View
Tottenham were linked with Kim in the past – how they must regret not signing him earlier in his career.
His price will skyrocket now he’s dazzling in Serie A and the Champions League.
Not only that, but Spurs can probably forget about signing Kim in January.
Napoli are well ahead in the Serie A title race. Letting such a crucial player leave mid-season would be madness.
And it’s not like the Partenopei are Scudetto regulars – their last one came in 1990.
So it’s pretty much a certainty that they won’t sell any of their key players and risk sabotaging their title hopes.
