Report: Southampton watch Barnsley youngster Callum Styles

Southampton were amongst the Premier League sides to send scouts to watch Barnsley youngster Callum Styles come up against Chelsea this week, .

Styles is one of a number of exciting young prospects currently catching the eye for the Tykes. The 20-year-old has made 23 appearances in the Championship this term.

He has scored three – four in all competitions – and contributed two assists, having played the large majority of his football this season as a left wing-back.

Barnsley impressed many with their performance against the Blues in the FA Cup. And it appears that Thomas Tuchel’s men were the not only Premier League side to have eyes on the game.

, Southampton and Brighton both sent scouts to watch the former Bury youngster.

It is little surprise to see the Saints target a left-sided player ahead of the summer. Ryan Bertrand has been excellent. But when he has not been available, Ralph Hasenhuttl has been left with a problem.

Styles – who was born just a few days after a Jo Tessem goal helped the Saints to a 1-1 draw with Chelsea in March 2000 – is a player who offers plenty of versatility. He can play almost anywhere in midfield as well as out wide.

But it appears that Southampton may not have a clear run should they pursue a move for the youngster this summer.
