Report: Southampton want Borussia Dortmund midfielder Sebastian Rode

Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl is continuing to look for new signing this summer. And , Sebastian Rode is a target for the Saints.

Borussia Dortmund are willing to sell Rode for a bargain price this summer. The German heavyweights will accept an offer of around €5m (just under £4.5m) for Rode.

Eintracht Frankfurt are also keen on re-signing Rode and are in pole position. He spent the second half of last season at Frankfurt on loan and previously had a four-year spell with the Bundesliga club.

But Southampton will provide competition for the midfielder’s services. Southampton director Ross Wilson has made an official enquiry for Rode and the Saints could firm up their interest with a concrete offer.

Rode is a talented defensive midfielder who has played in Germany for his whole career. During spells with Frankfurt, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, the 28-year-old has racked up a total of 125 Bundesliga outings.

Predominantly a defensive midfielder, Rode can also play in a more advanced central midfield role. The former Germany U21 international has struggled at Dortmund in recent times but impressed in the league and the Europa League for Frankfurt.

TBR’s view

Southampton are ready to let Hasenhuttl transform the team this summer. And his expert knowledge of the Bundesliga will be behind this interest in Rode.

When fit, Rode is a top performer in the German top-flight but he has had his injury concerns in recent seasons. Southampton need to weigh up whether this a low-cost risk worth taking.
