Report: Southampton open Weston McKennie talks; could pay £20m

Southampton have entered into talks regarding a potential £20 million move for Weston McKennie, a possible issue for Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side.

The Saints are seemingly looking to bolster their midfield ranks this summer. Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has already moved to Tottenham, that Harrison Reed is expected to join Fulham for £8 million.

that they have moved closer to landing McKennie. The Premier League side are reportedly in talks with Schalke over a potential £20 million switch for the USA international.

Sky Sports notes that the 21-year-old is keen to move to England this summer. But it is also suggested that Southampton may have to sell before they can complete a move for McKennie.

The report does note that a number of fringe players are expected to move on. It is difficult to see a way back for the likes of Mario Lemina, Wesley Hoedt and Guido Carrillo.

TBR View: McKennie arrival would be another brilliant move from Saints

Southampton have made a promising start to the window. Kyle Walker-Peters has signed permanently, while Mohammed Salisu has also arrived.

Signing McKennie would be a further statement of intent from the Saints. The youngster looks to have a lot of potential, and would arguably be a superb replacement for Hojbjerg.

There is a long way to go in the window. But Southampton appear to be doing the kind of business that may leave a number of their rivals ruing the fact that they did not act sooner this summer.
