Report: Southampton leading race for USA star, Tottenham boost

that Southampton are winning the race to sign USA international and Schalke midfielder Weston McKennie – which is likely to prove to be a boost for Tottenham Hotspur.

McKennie, 21, has been in sensational form for Schalke since he joined the club in the summer of 2017. Despite his tender age, McKennie has clocked up 91 appearances in all competitions as a holding midfielder or a defender.

A 19-time United States international, Southampton are leading the chase for McKennie. But the Saints are not alone in pursuit of the midfielder, with Leicester, Everton, Wolves and Newcastle also interested.

It is believed McKennie is rated at £26million but Schalke are aware they may have to accept £18million for his services. Such a move for McKennie, though, could be the boost Spurs need to get a deal of their own over the line.

Spurs remain front runners for Southampton midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and McKennie is deemed as the Dane’s replacement. Saints signing McKennie, then, could be just what Spurs need.

TBR’s view – McKennie could become a Premier League gem

To have earned the reputation McKennie has already achieved in the Bundesliga at just 21 years of age is more than impressive. The USA international has starred in numerous positions.

Tough-tackling but technically gifted, cheap but still very young, he could be a superb talent but also a bargain for the Saints. Such a move would be ideal for Southampton to replace Hojbjerg – also handing Spurs a boost.
