Report: Southampton in advanced talks to sell ‘very assured’ player after Hasenhuttl meeting
According to the , Southampton are in advanced talks with Norwich City over a deal for goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
The Championship winners are keen to take Gunn back to Carrow Road, 10 years after he left for Manchester City. He returned on loan for the 2017/18 season, before sealing a £10m move to St Mary’s.
But Gunn has been unable to hold down the number one jersey against competition from Fraser Forster and Alex McCarthy. And he is now on the verge of moving back to Norwich for £5m, in a deal Southampton hope will eventually reach around £10m through add-ons.
Gunn spent much of last season on loan in the Championship with Stoke City. The 25-year-old only made , however, and saw his campaign cut short by a . In those outings, he kept six clean sheets but also conceded 21 goals.
The Norwich-born shot-stopper will now aim to rival Tim Krul for minutes under Daniel Farke following the Canaries’ promotion. He replaces Orjan Nyland in the backup role, with the Norwegian expected to leave at the end of his contract.

Gunn nearing a permanent move to Norwich will leave Southampton with a lot of regrets over how his career has played out. But they will be even more desperate to see him now do well, in order to make back what they paid Man City only three years ago.
Gunn showed some promise early into his Stoke stay to suggest he could turn things around and return to Southampton. Potters boss Michael O’Neill claimed he was ‘very assured’ with the ball at his feet and gave the defender’s confidence back in November via .
But failing to secure minutes in the Championship was never going to be enough for Hasenhuttl to justify recalling Gunn. And he now must accept an understudy role at Norwich, waiting for a chance to become the number one again.
