Report: Southampton eye Toby Savin; Angus Gunn and Fraser Forster on way out

Southampton are monitoring Accrington Stanley teenager Toby Savin, that both Angus Gunn and Fraser Forster are on the way out at St Mary’s.

Ralph Hasenhuttl continues to do an outstanding job with the Saints. But the goalkeeper situation may be one that the club look to improve if they can keep making progress.

Alex McCarthy is the current number one. Meanwhile, Gunn is out on loan at Stoke after a difficult start to life on the south coast following his £13.5 million move (via ). And Fraser Forster has been on the bench since his return from his loan at Celtic.

The Sun on Sunday (22/11; page 61) claims that both Gunn and Forster are on the way out. And they have reportedly identified a replacement.

The report suggests that they want Accrington youngster Savin. It is noted that Southampton would like to sign him before potentially loaning him out.

TBR View: Forster departure makes sense, but Gunn’s loan makes exit seem unlikely until summer

It currently looks difficult to see Saints losing any goalkeepers in January. As keen as Forster may be to secure regular football elsewhere, Gunn’s loan surely means that he will need to stay until the summer at least.

Signing Savin may not change that situation. If he is going to be loaned out, Hasenhuttl will still need cover for McCarthy.

Having said that, Forster’s wages could surely complicate matters. . That is a lot for a club to pay for a player who will barely feature.

So if a significant offer comes in, the Saints would still be wise to consider it.
