Report: Southampton and Stoke targeting goalkeeper swap deal

Southampton and Stoke City are working on a swap deal that would see Angus Gunn move to the Championship side, while Jack Butland would head to St Mary’s, .

Gunn’s time on the south coast has not quite worked out. He joined for £13.5 million, , but has predominantly been second choice to Alex McCarthy after struggling during his stint between the sticks. And it is claimed that he is now ready to leave.

Meanwhile, Butland’s career has stagnated in recent years. There was a time when it appeared that the 27-year-old was going to be a key player for club and country for years to come.

However, he is yet to feature for Stoke this term. And it appears that he may now be on the move.

that Butland and Gunn are poised to swap clubs this summer.

The report labels the move a straight exchange, which would suggest that neither club is set to pay a fee to the other for either goalkeeper.

TBR View: Surprising move from Southampton

Gunn has perhaps not lived up to expectations thus far. Nevertheless, it is potentially a surprising move to allow the youngster to move on this summer.

He can continue to get better in the coming years. So it may prove to be a good piece of business for Stoke.

In fairness, Butland has proved that he has the talent to be a fantastic goalkeeper. And if he can get his career back on track in the future, there is no reason he cannot prove to be an inspired addition to Ralph Hasenhuttl’s ranks.
