Report: Some at Tottenham now think Conte really should have sold £27m player in January
Some people at Tottenham think manager Antonio Conte should have sold winger Steven Bergwijn during the winter transfer window.
Bergwijn looked close to leaving Spurs during January but then he scored two late goals in the sensational comeback win at Leicester.
Even after that double salvo, there were still rumours of a potential exit but the say the club were aware it would have been a bit of a PR disaster to sell the Dutchman at that point.
But that has created an element of frustration because the wideman has not offered much since and some Spurs insiders feel Bergwijn should still have been offloaded.
Their report reads: “There is a view from some at Spurs that Bergwijn being the match-winner that night (at Leicester) may not have been entirely in the club’s best interests.
“His stunning late show effectively ensured it would be a PR disaster to sell him to Ajax in the final week of January, as Spurs were considering, but he has since played just 175 minutes in the Premier League.
“Clearly, the club might have been better off selling him and doing a late deal for a wing-back or an attacker Conte really rates.”
Perhaps getting Bergwijn out and someone else through the door with the money might have given Conte the boost he needed to get Tottenham over the line in the chase for the Champions League.
Bergwijn looks to have no Tottenham future under Conte
Conte has already signed a new player in the position Bergwijn wants to play, bringing in Dejan Kulusevski to round off his front three.
That was an indicator of what Conte thought of Bergwijn and his lack of gametime after selling him is hardly a ringing endorsement for the £27 million () man.
It will probably be better for Spurs to cash in during the summer, when Conte will have more time to pick out a target to spend the money on.
