Report: Sheffield Wednesday want Stoke City talisman Lee Gregory

Sheffield Wednesday are to rival Championship rivals Middlesbrough to sign Stoke City striker Lee Gregory,

Garry Monk is keen to bolster his strike force before tomorrow’s domestic transfer deadline, with the 32-year-old a target.

Gregory has fallen down the pecking order under Michael O’Neill, although he has started the last two games.

The former Millwall man scored Stoke’s first Championship goal of the 2020/21 campaign during a 1-0 win over Preston North End.

Gregory was born in Sheffield and is a proven performer in the second-tier.

Wednesday are currently bottom of the Championship having started the campaign with -12 points.

With that in mind, the Owls need to start firing soon and Monk has recognised a need for more firepower.

Neil Warnock is also keen to take Gregory to the Riverside Stadium with their boss keen to overcome a tricky start to the campaign too.

The Stoke man has scored 37 goals in 168 Championship appearances, although his work rate shouldn’t be underestimated.

Gregory works better when utilised as a partnership in the attack and both interested parties will be aware of that.

Last season the 32-year-old scored six goals and registered three assists after starting 22 games for the Potters.

He has fallen out of favour though with O’Neill seemingly willing to wash his hands of the talisman.

Gregory began his career by playing for the Sheffield United youth academy and heading to Wednesday would therefore be an interesting move.

Despite his former Blades allegiances, they are firmly in the past and it’s fair to say he’d be ideal for the Owls.

His work rate would be a useful asset, whilst he’s more than capable of scoring goals with the right level of service.
