Bullen has awarded the 19-year-old across all junior competitions to date, of which he has started 15, although Agbontohoma has not featured in either of Southampton’s last three Premier League 2 encounters.

With his contract due to be up in the summer, Agbontohoma is already looking toward the future, having joined Sheffield Wednesday on trial and featured for the Championship club’s youth side as they beat Watford 2-1 on Monday.

He was to be given the chance of earning a summer switch to the South Yorkshire outfit, who previously signed Matt Young following the right-back’s time in Southampton’s academy. Although he with the Owls.

Agbontohoma enjoyed a step up in his development after joining Bullen’s U23s side for the current campaign. But he rarely proved able to help Southampton achieve positive results in the Premier League 2 with across his 15 outings.

He also occasionally caught the attention of referees who brandished three yellow cards and one straight red in the defender’s direction, and appeared to be heading out of Southampton with his recent omission from the action despite three straight defeats.

Instead, the centre-half will now be expected to work on securing a move to Sheffield Wednesday should he enjoy his time with the club while on trial, and look to having failed to do so at St. Mary’s.

Agbontohoma had aspired to become a first-team player on the south coast when he signed his one-year contract last summer, having told Southampton’s official at the time:

“You see players like Gareth Bale and Theo Walcott coming through this club and it makes you think that you have an opportunity. You see players you train with joining in with the first-team and think that could be me any day of the week.”
