Report: Sheffield Wednesday on brink of landing Connor Wickham

Sheffield Wednesday are reportedly close to sealing the signing of Crystal Palace striker, Connor Wickham.

The big striker has struggled with injury throughout his career. He’s made less than 40 appearances for the Eagles since signing in 2015.

However, Wickham will link up once again with the Owls. The recent arrival of Cenk Tosun at Selhurst Park has bumped Wickham further down the pecking order.

That, then, has opened the door for Wickham to seal a move to Hillsborough.

Wickham has already played for Sheffield Wednesday twice before. He scored just once in an initial loan spell before a second spell was hugely successful in 2014. Wickham bagged eight times in eleven appearances.

Wednesday are keen on adding new players this January. However, with a threat of points deductions and further penalties hanging over the club, finances are quite tight.

The signing of Wickham – believed to be on an initial loan deal – would give Garry Monk some extra attacking options.

Furthermore, Steven Fletcher is going to be missing for the foreseeable future. Wickham’s arrival, then, would be a very timely one.

A shrewd signing if he can stay fit – TBR View

Connor Wickham has always had plenty of ability. He’s a striker who knows where the back of the net in and can count himself really unlucky because of injuries.

However, if he can stay fit and play regularly, then the Owls will have a fine striker on their hands.

He was capped all the way up to England under-21 level. In fact, if it wasn’t for the injuries he’s suffered, there’s every chance he’d have got full England honours.

The Owls will be hoping that Wickham can hit the ground running and replace what is a huge loss in Steven Fletcher.

If he does get going, then Wednesday might well sneak into the playoffs come the end of the season.
