Sheffield Wednesday have reportedly made a late move to try sign defender David Bates from German club Hamburg.
, Wednesday have joined the pursuit late on deadline day for the 22-year-old.
It is understood that Championship rivals Wigan have been frontrunners to win the race for his signature, but they now have competition from the Owls.
The report explains that Bates is now deemed surplus to requirements at Hamburg, who play in the second-tier of German football.
Bates was a regular in the Hamburg team last season and he managed 28 games across all competitions.
The Scottish centre-back is someone that is decent with the ball at his feet and a physical presence in the backline.

Wednesday certainly need another centre-back option through the door before the window closes and late target Bates would provide cover.
He previously made his way into senior football with Rangers and has been brave enough to test himself in Germany, but it’s unclear on how he would cope in the Championship.
The ball-playing centre-back is still a young defender that has room to grow and someone worth taking a chance on.
Wednesday kicked off their league campaign with an impressive 3-1 win away to Reading at the weekend and can look to build some real momentum with one more addition in the summer window.
