Report: Sheffield United have shown interest in Newcastle’s Dwight Gayle

Newcastle United’s Dwight Gayle is on the radar of Sheffield United, .

The Mail reports that the Blades are planning to step up their bid to land a new goalscorer. It is suggested that Chris Wilder’s men are among the front-runners to sign Rhian Brewster.

The Mail notes that they have also had a bid rejected for Folarin Balogun. And it appears that they also have their eye on Gayle.

Sheffield United retain an interest in the 29-year-old, . However, it is noted that he is currently on the sidelines due to injury.

In truth, it is difficult to imagine Wilder pushing for a bid for Gayle to be made during this window. , the former Crystal Palace man is set to be sidelined for up to four months after undergoing knee surgery.

That would suggest that Gayle – who earns £40,000-a-week, – is likely to be out until the New Year. And it would therefore, be unlikely that a club is going to be prepared to make an offer in this window.

It is interesting that the Blades reportedly retain an interest. That would suggest that he could have another look in January when he may be back for Steve Bruce’s side.

Of course, much will depend on the business that they do in the coming weeks. Should they land Brewster or Balogun, or another potential target, they may decide they have little need to consider Gayle once again.
