Report: Schalke set to hijack Arsenal’s deal for Markus Schubert

Arsenal have been searching for a new goalkeeper this summer. And recent reports suggested they were homing in on their number one target.

, Markus Schubert’s proposed free transfer to Arsenal was imminent. The Gunners were expected to finalise a deal for the Dynamo Dresden goalkeeper.

Schubert was seen as the long-term replacement for Petr Cech at Arsenal. And Unai Emery was already considering Schubert’s immediate future. Arsenal reportedly contacted several clubs across Europe and the Football League to offer him out on loan.

But now these transfer plans have changed. , Schubert is closing in on a move to Schalke instead. The German side have swooped late to gazump Arsenal.

The Germany U21 international, who is currently away at the Euros, will probably stay in Germany. Schalke can offer Schubert top-flight football and this appeals to him.

Arsenal will now need to look elsewhere for a new goalkeeper. Cech retired at the end of the 2018/19 season and David Ospina is leaving so Bernd Leno needs some competition.

TBR’s view

This is a major blow to Arsenal’s plans. Schubert would have resolved the goalkeeper issue and his contract situation made him a bargain.

The 21-year-old fit the bill perfectly for Arsenal. He is a modern-style goalkeeper who is good with the ball at his feet. And many spectators believe he will become a top talent in the future.

But Schalke seem to have won the race. Arsenal now need to step up their hunt for a goalkeeper again.
