Report: Roma reignite interest in Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren

Reports in Italy suggest that Dejan Lovren’s proposed move to Roma could be back on. , Roma are preparing a new offer for Liverpool defender Lovren.

Roma were interested in Lovren earlier in the summer but seemed to move on to other targets. But with moves for Daniele Rugani and Nicolas Nkoulou stalling, Lovren is back on the wishlist.

The Serie A club will submit a new offer for Liverpool’s Lovren, hoping to change some details of the deal. Roma pulled out last time because Liverpool wanted an obligation to buy clause inserted into any loan exit.

When Roma reopen negotiations with the Liverpool hierarchy, they will be pushing for an option to buy clause instead. The other stumbling block is contract negotiations. Lovren reportedly wants a lucrative deal and a four-year contract.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool will accept Roma’s proposal. And even if they do, there is work to be done to convince the 30-year-old to move. But this is one to watch before the European window shuts.

TBR’s view

Roma’s defensive options are limited at the moment so a move to the Italian capital could resurrect Lovren’s career. The Croatia international is the fourth-choice defender at Liverpool and game time will be in short supply this season.

Virgil Van Dijk is irreplaceable at the back while Joel Matip’s form is keeping the impressive Joe Gomez out of the side. Lovren’s exit could also open the door for Ki-Jan Hoever or Sepp van den Berg to step up.
