Report: Roma looking at Arsenal defender as Chris Smalling deal stutters

that Paulo Fonseca’s side are considering a move to sign Arsenal defender Sokratis Papastathopoulos, as a deal for Manchester United and England centre-back Chris Smalling stutters.

Smalling, 30, starred on loan at Roma last season after a surprise season-long loan move from Manchester United to the Italian club. He has clocked up 37 appearances in all competitions for Roma over the course of the past 12 months.

Now, Roma want to sign him permanently but it is believed that the Italian club are struggling to agree a fee with Manchester United. It may see the England ace remain at United at least until January, with two years left on his United contract.

Roma still need a defender and their attention may turn to Greek veteran Sokratis, who is likely to be available on the cheap given his £92,000-a-week () contract is due to expire next June. Arsenal are happy to sell Sokratis.

TBR’s view – Arsenal will be hoping for a quick Sokratis sale

Sokratis is way down the pecking order at Arsenal, with new signing Gabriel and William Saliba preferred to the ex-Borussia Dortmund man. David Luiz, Rob Holding and others are preferred at the back.

Arsenal remain in the hunt for Atletico Madrid star Thomas Partey and they need to sell some of their fringe players to raise funds for the Ghanaian’s arrival. Selling Sokratis will help them do that.
