Report: Roma keen to sign Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi on loan with a purchase option

Roma are the latest club to enter the race for Arsenal defender Shkodran Mustafi. , the Serie A club are hoping to sign Mustafi on loan with a purchase option.

This would be an initial one-year loan deal with a view to making it permanent next summer. Making Mustafi’s contract permanent would cost Roma between €20m and €25m, meaning Arsenal could pocket as much as £23m in summer 2020.

Mustafi has slipped down the pecking order at Arsenal and Unai Emery is willing to let him leave. Roma are desperate to sign a new central defender and Mustafi fits the bill after missing out on Dejan Lovren.

The Germany international has played over 100 times for the Gunners since joining from Valencia. But his performances have been criticised and Emery is ready to take a new direction in defence.

Roma could be the new home for Mustafi. The 27-year-old would be moving to the Italian capital on loan, hoping to earn himself a permanent transfer next summer.

TBR’s view

This arrangement works well for Arsenal. In the short-term, they get Mustafi’s wages off the books and they could potentially receive a handy transfer kitty boost next summer if Roma take up their option to buy.

Emery has made it clear that Mustafi is not in his plans this season. David Luiz, Calum Chambers and Sokratis Papastathopoulos have all been preferred to him this season with Rob Holding also due back from injury soon. This transfer works well for all parties.
