The Gunners have also seemingly identified a replacement for Xhaka. As , Arsenal are keen on signing Wolves midfielder Ruben Neves. The Portuguese international is available this summer.

A hit and miss spell with Arsenal

The Swiss international joined the Gunners in 2016, and his time in north London has been mixed.

Xhaka has been viewed as a trustworthy player by Arsene Wenger, Unai Emery and Mikel Arteta. However, errors and controversy continue to follow the former Borussia Monchengladbach captain.

Last season alone saw Xhaka receive a red card against Burnley for a needless action as well as gifting the Clarets a goal in the reverse fixture, throwing away vital points for Arsenal.

Although Xhaka was heavily relied upon by all three of Arsenal’s previous managers, the club could do with a change of personnel in the midfield.

And if the Gunners are about to secure £17m for the Swiss international, the north London club would have done well this summer to recoup a decent fee for the 28-year-old.
