Report: Raphinha clashed with Bielsa before boss’ Leeds departure

Raphinha clashed with Marcelo Bielsa over his defensive responsibilities during the latter stages of the Argentinian’s tenure at Leeds United, .

Raphinha has been a shining light in a difficult season for Leeds. He is their top goalscorer in the Premier League. And without his goals, the Whites would surely be in much greater danger of going down.

There are now questions being asked about the Brazilian’s future at Elland Road. However, he was able to put them to one side with a massive contribution in the must-win game against Norwich.

He provided the decisive assist with a moment of ‘unbelievable‘ composure in the 94th minute. But he also hit the bar after an amazing move also involving Patrick Bamford.

His potential return to form appears to have come at the ideal time. But it would seem that he was potentially one player who needed the change in the dug-out.

Raphinha came in for criticism during the latter stages of Bielsa’s time in charge. He was replaced at half-time against Everton. And he then did not start the clash with Manchester United the following weekend. He did go on to score that day.

Interestingly, that he clashed with Bielsa over his defensive duties.

Leeds system did not allow for side to carry Raphinha defensively

Sometimes, teams are prepared to make allowances for their star player. And Raphinha has done enough to be that player for Leeds this season.

However, he was playing in a Bielsa team. Therefore, the 25-year-old staying with his man tracking back was as important as any other duel on the pitch.

In fairness, he had been absolutely outstanding for the large majority of his time working under Bielsa. But it did seem that some of the faith was lost in the last few games before Bielsa was sacked. And that hurt Leeds at times.

Stuart Dallas and Rodrigo criticised Raphinha after the Northern Irishman conceded a penalty against Liverpool.

Leeds fans will hope that the slight changes to the system under Marsch now help bring out the best in Raphinha once again.
