that Portsmouth goalkeeper Craig MacGillivray is a target for Rangers as Steven Gerrard looks to bring in competition for Allan McGregor, either in January or next summer.
MacGillivray, 26, has starred for Portsmouth this season – conceding just 17 goals in 15 league games this season. Indeed, the former Shrewsbury Town stopper has only seen 79 goals fly past him in 75 league and cup appearances.
His performances have not gone unnoticed on the international scene. Steve Clarke has called him up to the Scotland squad for the last three international breaks – but he has remained on the bench for Scotland’s last six games.
McGregor is set to turn 38 and his contract expires at the end of the season, but is expected to sign a new deal. Wes Foderingham, though, is likely to leave the Gers in the near future – and MacGillivray could be signed as his replacement.
However, Rangers face competition from Championship sides Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City.
TBR’s view – MacGillivray an excellent goalkeeper, but expensive
With McGregor showing no signs of slowing down, MacGillivray is likely to be second choice for the foreseeable future. So to spend £2.5million on the goalkeeper is somewhat expensive – given that he is going to warm the bench most matches.
There is no doubt that the Pompey stopper is an excellent goalkeeper. But for Rangers – who announced losses of £11.3million – should avoid spending so much money on a player that is going to be back-up to McGregor.
